The "hadron hose" is a new toroidal focussing system for
the NuMI beam which will go inside the decay pipe tunnel.
It is a 1 kA wire which runs down the
center of the NuMI decay pipe, providing a restoring force to diverging
pions as theypropagate down the pipe.
The Hadron Hose provides focussing of the pions after
the magnetic horns, and will help reduce our systematic uncertainties in
predicting the muon neutrino spectrum at the far detector.
Below is a picture of the beamline with and without the Hadron Hose.
The hadron hose's 1 kA wire provides a toroidal magnetic
field that causes the pions coming from the target and
horns to orbit around the wire. This steers them away from
the tunnel walls where they could interact before decaying
to neurinos, and also reduces systematics in the neutrino
energy spectrum (see the Hadron Hose Proposal).

We are building a 40 foot prototype segment of the NuMI decay pipe
and equiping it with a Hadron Hose Wire down the middle. This segment
will be used to study installation and survey/alignment procedures inside
the tunnel. We have also found the prototype useful for trying in situ
demonstrations of new wire supports or tensioning mechanisms. The
prototype will be pulsed with 1 kA, 300 usec kicker magnet supplies
See construction and design photos of the
prototype here.
Here are some results on wire
creep that we've been doing
over the past months.
