NuMI Neutrino Beam
Monitoring
The NuMI beamline produces an intense beam of muon neutrinos that result
from the weak decays of mesons (pions and kaons) in an evacuated tunnel.
The mesons are produced in a target upstream of to focusing 'horns' that
sign- and momenum- select the particles and focuses them into the decay
tunnel.
The monitoring system presently consists of ionization chambers which will
be placed at the end of the decay pipe and in three 'alcoves' dug into the
dolomite rock. The 'alcoves' will measure fluxes of muons that are
produced along with the neutrinos, while the chambers at the end of the
pipe will measure muons, undecayed mesons, and protons that did not react
in the target.
